Newsletter #7 - Whodunnit
Kia ora everyone,
I hope everyone is doing well, and I had a lovely long weekend. I have just returned from the Wellington Folk Festival, where I spent my long weekend jamming and learning tunes.
In this newsletter, I have a couple of updates and two local film festivals coming up that I will be attending. But, mostly, I want to encourage you to check out Shortland Street tonight, as tonight's episode is something special...
Turn Up The Party Music!
Tonight, Shortland Street is featuring a highly musical episode, packed with about three times more music than a typical installment. This episode breaks from the show's usual format, presenting its story through interwoven flashbacks as the cast members recount the events of a staff party that spiraled out of control, resulting in the tragic death of one of the attendees-- transforming the show into a whodunnit mystery.
To seamlessly blend the party music with the mystery music as we transition in and out of flashbacks, all the music at the party is original. In fact, all the music in this episode is original, as I even altered the opening theme of the show—a rare occurrence, that I reserve for special episodes.
Writing all this original party music led to some enjoyable "remixes" of my character themes. See if you can pick out Madonna, Harry, and Marty's themes (among others) rearranged as electronic dance music bangers. To create this dance music, I drew on my experiences making dance music for the nightclub in One Lane Bridge last year.
Speaking of One Lane Bridge, the music for Season 3 has just received a nomination for the best score at the NZ TV Awards! Working on that show, under the composer Claire Cowan, was an incredible and inspiring experience. I learned a great deal from her.
Soundtrack Releases
The music for "You’re Out" is now available on all streaming platforms!
Meanwhile tomorrow, I will be releasing the soundtrack for "The Generation Gardener." Please take a moment to give them a listen.
What’s coming up?
Wairarapa Film Festival
This Saturday, "Follow The Light" will be featured at the Wairarapa Film Festival, and I'll be there in attendance. I had the pleasure of attending the Wairarapa Film Festival last year, where two films I had written the music for were showcased. It's a delightful festival, and I'm looking forward to another enjoyable experience.
Aotearoa Poetry Film Festival
Next week, I have a short film showing at the Aotearoa Poetry Film Festival, a new and intriguing event. I'll provide more details about the short film "Butterfly" in the next newsletter. It's a beautiful poetry film centered around a ballet dancer, and the music plays a significant role in the film. I can't
wait to share it with everyone.
Thanks so much for reading.
